Spring 2020 News Writing Internship

Intern with the Greater Long Island Media Group, Long Island’s fastest-growing news organization and learn how to report local news from experts in the field.

Interns will have the opportunity to work with our team of journalists on any/all of our sites to learn how to cover local news from town board meetings to beach parties. While with us, students will learn how to find and research story ideas, conduct interviews and take photos and video for a variety of stories in various towns. In addition, interns will learn details of online writing including WordPress, SEO, time management and social media.

This is an unpaid internship that can be done for academic credit.

We require 120 hours to complete this program. During those hours you will do the following:

  • Write stories each week for publication to be submitted to the site, reviewed by editors prior to publishing.-Learn how to conduct interviews with professionals from town officials to local restaurateurs
  • Create photo-based stories, with your own photos.
  • Learn how to use social media to share stories using basic social media like Facebook and Twitter.

There will be weekly assignments to complete these goals.

Requirements:

  • Knowledge of AP Style
  • Knowledge of WordPress or another CMS
  • Strong communication skills
  • Ability to work independently
  • Computer with internet connection
  • Your own transportation


Started in 2015 by seasoned journalist and Long Island native Michael White, the Greater brand covers Babylon, Bay Shore, Moriches, Patchogue and Port Jefferson and their surrounding areas and focuses on features and community news as opposed to crime and politics.

GreaterMoriches is managed by husband-and-wife team Carl and Angela Corry. Carl is the former executive producer for News12 Interactive and former online local news editor for Newsday. He currently teaches journalism at Suffolk County Community College. Angela is the former editor in chief of TheCelebrityCafe.com and is currently the senior managing editor for Inquisitr.com.

The Sayville site is run by Brian Harmon, former New York Daily News assistant metro editor.

The Greater-brand news sites were viewed 2.1 million times in 2018, with 1.25 million unique visitors and is listed with major search engines and Google News.
