Long Island’s only Bojangles in the works for Farmingville

|

Bojangles is poised to open what would be its only Long Island location — together with a Panera Bread next door.

Plans have been filed for the North Carolina-based chicken-and-biscuit chain to open its first Long Island restaurant on Horseblock Road in Farmingville, just east of Route 83, according to documents submitted to the Town of Brookhaven.

A Panera Bread is proposed immediately to the east, with both restaurants featuring drive-thru service.

The twin proposals are scheduled for discussion at Wednesday’s Brookhaven Zoning Board of Appeals meeting at 2 p.m.

If approved, the Bojangles would span 2,806 square feet, while the Panera would total 3,315 square feet. The restaurants would rise on a lot adjacent to the Stop & Shop gas station at the northeast corner of Horseblock Road and Route 83 — across from Farmingville’s longtime Taco Bell.

Both eateries are planned as part of Holmesview Commons Phase 2, which connects to the 20-acre Phase 1 retail center fronting Route 83. That project, completed about three years ago, remains vacant after plans for an Amazon Fresh store fell through.

The Bojangles application was submitted in August, marking another step in the company’s push into the New York market. Bojangles announced this summer that its first New York location will open this winter in East Flatbush, Brooklyn.

Greater Long Island reached out to Bojangles’ public relations office for comment and has not yet received a response. Additionally, the news site contacted a town spokesperson, who said he would look to gather details about the project.

“If an application has been made, it still has to be submitted, approved by planning and voted by the town board,” said Drew Scott, the town spokesperson.

The vicinity of the Route 83-Horseblock Road intersection has seen a wave of change in recent months. Last year a Chick-fil-A opened and an existing Burger King was renovated at nearby Expressway Plaza Shopping Center, just south of Horseblock Road.

In September the longstanding Xpressions adult store, which was located on Route 83 behind the Taco Bell, closed. A dispensary shop is planed for the site.

Earlier this year, TGI Fridays in the Expressway Plaza Shopping Center closed.
