A wanted fugitive from Hampton Bays allegedly punched a police officer in the face and tried to grab a taser during a violent confrontation early Sunday, Southampton Town Police said.

Officers about 1:35 a.m. responded to a domestic disturbance involving Terrell Harris, 38, who was wanted on outstanding warrants from multiple agencies, including the New York State Police, East Hampton Village Police and authorities in Westchester County.

When police encountered him behind the Hampton Bays Public Library, Harris allegedly sped off, leading officers on a brief pursuit through the neighborhood.

After stopping in front of a nearby residence, Harris got out of his car and immediately attacked an officer, striking him in the face, police said.

Amid the struggle, an officer’s taser holster broke and the weapon fell to the ground. Harris grabbed the taser but was prevented from using it as additional officers rushed in to subdue him, authorities said.

Both officers involved were treated at a local hospital for injuries and later released. Harris was also hospitalized for a hand injury sustained during the fight, police said.

Harris was charged with felony assault with intent to injure an officer, criminal possession of a weapon, and driving while intoxicated. He also faces charges of resisting arrest, criminal possession of a controlled substance, aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, and circumventing an interlock device.

Police said Harris remains in custody awaiting arraignment and will also face charges connected to his outstanding warrants.
