A young registered nurse from Copiague who was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer earlier this summer is receiving a wave of support from the Long Island community and beyond.
More than 240 donations totaling $23,000 have flooded into a GoFundMe fundraising effort for Milka Espinal, who turned 24 this month. Espinal, after earning degrees at Stony Brook University and Rutgers, was set to begin her nursing career when doctors discovered two sarcoma tumors, according to the GoFundMe page established by Yocairy Espinal.
Angiosarcoma, a rare and aggressive type of cancer, is most commonly diagnosed in people over the age of 70, according to the National Cancer Institute. While it can occur at any age, it is more prevalent in older adults.
Yocairy Espinal reported that Milka Espinal has begun intensive chemotherapy.
“Known for her strength and resilience, Milka is fighting hard, but the road ahead is challenging,” Yocairy Espinal wrote. “We are raising funds to support her as she faces ongoing treatments and the financial burdens they bring.”
“Every donation will go directly to Milka to help her during this difficult time,” Yocairy Espinal said. “Please keep Milka and her family in your prayers, and thank you to everyone … for your support.”
