Mastic woman injured in fatal rush hour crash on Sunrise Highway in Holbrook

A Mastic woman is hospitalized with serious injuries following a fatal morning-commute car wreck today on Sunrise Highway in Holbrook, police said.

Tisha Mannella, 42, was a passenger in a westbound 2000 Mercury Grand Marquis that struck a disabled flatbed truck in the right lane of the highway between Exits 52 and 51 at 5:54 a.m., Suffolk cops said. The driver of the Mercury, Michael Melchiore, 47, of Babylon, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Mannella was taken by ambulance to Stony Brook University Hospital. The driver of the flatbed, Shane Aiello, 54, of Farmingdale, was transported to Long Island Community Hospital in East Patchogue for treatment of minor injuries.

Given the time of the crash, traffic was snarled on Sunrise Highway and on roads in the area of the wreck for hours.

The Mercury was impounded for a safety check. Detectives asked that anyone with information on the crash call the Fifth Squad at 631.854.8552.
