Trump picks LI’s Zeldin to lead Environmental Protection Agency

President-elect Donald Trump on Monday tapped former New York Congressman Lee Zeldin of Long Island to lead the Environmental Protection Agency in his administration.

In a statement, Trump praised Zeldin, a four-term House Republican from Shirley and longtime Trump supporter, as “a true fighter for America First policies.”

“He will ensure fair and swift deregulatory decisions that will be enacted in a way to unleash the power of American businesses, while at the same time maintaining the highest environmental standards, including the cleanest air and water on the planet,” the president-elect added. “He will set new standards on environmental review and maintenance that will allow the United States to grow in a healthy and well-structured way.”

Zeldin, 44, represented New York’s 1st District and is known for his support of small businesses and veterans.

A U.S. Army veteran, he has been a prominent advocate for energy independence and environmental standards on Long Island, focusing on local water quality and sustainable development.

He also ran for New York State governor in 2022, ultimately losing to now-Governor Kathy Hochul by 47.1 to 52.9 percent of the vote.

“It’s an honor to join President Trump’s Cabinet as EPA Administrator,” Zeldin said following the announcement.

In a statement on X, Zeldin said, “We will restore US energy dominance, revitalize our auto industry to bring back American jobs, and make the US the global leader of AI. We will do so while protecting access to clean air and water.”

Trump’s selection of Zeldin comes after his convincing Election Day win over Democratic nominee Vice President Kamala Harris.
