Work begins on Overbay apartment complex on West Broadway in Port Jeff

|

Construction on a long-planned rental apartment complex on the site of a blighted former marine dealership is underway at 217 West Broadway in Port Jefferson.

The apartments will overlook Port Jefferson Harbor and are next to The Shipyard apartment complex.

Built by Overbay LLC, which is operated by Northwind Group of Hauppauge, the 54,000-square-foot residential building will feature 46 two-bedrooms/two-baths and six one-bedroom/one-bath apartments for a total of 52-units. The three-story building will have parking on covered ground level with two stories of apartments above.

The project is expected to be finished by September 2020.

Finalization of amenities are not complete, but the developer revealed that there will be a fitness room, outdoor areas, and a great room.

Monthly rent for the units has not been determined and leasing hasn’t begun yet, but according to a spokesperson for the developer, they have fielded over 50 inquiries so far.

They plan to begin marketing the complex this spring.

The apartment complex received tax incentives from the Town of Brookhaven Industrial Development Agency in 2015.

The site was once home to Islander Boat Center. The Northwind Group purchased the property in 2013.

Overbay was an estate in the early 20th century that looked over Port Jefferson Harbor, hence the name. Newspaper clippings as early as the 1910s in the Port Jefferson Echo, a local newspaper at the time, contain announcements for a summer home called Overbay owned by “Lawyer and Mrs. Addison Pratt of Manhattan.”

Former village historian Ken Brady wrote of a fire at Overbay on May 11, 1940 in the historical archives on the village’s website. He said the home was located off Liberty Street.
