$100K grant bolsters plans for new dog park at Stillwell Woods in Syosset

A state grant of $100,000 will help boost efforts to build a new dog park in Syosset, which comes as part of a multi-million dollar park overhaul that’s in the works for Stillwell Woods.

The Town of Oyster Bay made the announcement last week.

Supervisor Joe Saladino said the grant was secured through state Assemblyman Jake Blumencranz’s office.

“I’m proud to secure these funds for the design and construction of a new dog park in Syosset,” Blumencranz said in a statement. “This project will enhance the overall experience at Stillwell Park by adding designated areas for large and small dogs, ensuring an enjoyable experience for pets and their owners alike.”

The town is currently in the process of taking title to the 270-acre preserve off South Woods Road from Nassau County, Saladino said.

Town officials will then be seeking input from residents on plans and improvements.

Stillwell Park is already a popular destination for young athletes and outdoor enthusiasts, featuring trails, open spaces, and recreational facilities.

A dog park will further enhance the park’s offerings, making it a hub for families and pet owners in the area, a town announcement reads.

Town spokesman Brian Nevin told Newsday it will cost $230,000 for the dog park and the necessary parking, with plans to add another $3 million in resources from both the town and county to further upgrade the park with new fields, parking lots and bathrooms.

Previous plans to transfer the property to the Syosset school district were rejected by voters, according to reports.

“We are thrilled to receive these grant funds from Assemblyman Blumencranz, which allows us to bring this much-needed amenity to Syosset,” Saladino said. “The dog park will provide a dedicated space where residents and their pets can enjoy the outdoors and connect with our community.”

The Newsday report indicates the dog park will measure 200 x 100 feet.
