Fulton’s Gate was even more green and jovial than usual this Sunday afternoon in Patchogue Village.
That’s because the Irish pub on East Main Street was playing host to the annual Passing of the Sash ceremony in the run-up to the St. Patrick’s Parade that happens Sunday, March 17.
The stash was bestowed upon Paula Murphy, a longtime Patchogue volunteer who chairs the Greater Patchogue Foundation’s Beautification Committee.
She also runs beautification efforts for the village Business Improvement District.
“Nobody has kept Patchogue more green than Paula Murphy,” said last year’s grand marshal, David Kennedy, who removed his sash Saturday to drape it over Murphy.
“This is a very hard thing for me to do — and be — so in order to accept this I had to understand that it’s about a body of work,” Murphy told the dozens gathered on Sunday. “For 15 years there’s been wonderful people who have helped make this happen [the Beautification Committee]. Some are no longer with us. Many of us still continue the work.
“We have worked hard, and Patchogue has benefitted … Patchogue has always been my town, and I’m proud of it.”
