Patchogue is going purple for Alzheimer’s Awareness Month

|

If you’re starting to see Patchogue punctuated by purple, here’s why.

The Greater Patchogue Chamber of Commerce is partnering with businesses and elected leaders to “Paint Patchogue Purple” for Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month.

More than three dozens businesses are participating within the village and beyond, and counting.

The local businesses are decorating their storefronts with purple ribbons — donated by the Village Walk assisted living complex — and offering specials on purple items.

Money from a point-of-sale campaign will then go the the chamber’s walk team that’s participating in the End Alzheimer’s Walk on Sept. 28 in Yaphank.

The awareness campaign runs from June 16 to June 30, both inside and outside the shops — as there’s also a social media campaign using #PaintPatchoguePurple.

As part of the overall efforts, The Float Place in Patchogue will be hosting a Sunset Yoga and Meditation event on the bay on Monday, June 24, at Mascot Dock in Patchogue.

Here’s the sunset event schedule:

6 p.m. – Pranayama and yoga class led by Raquel Vamos of Free Spirits Yoga
7:30 p.m.- Crystal singing bowl meditation led by Annette Peraino
8 p.m. – Sunset meditation led by Dawn DeLeonardis

“We applaud the Greater Patchogue Chamber of Commerce and the Village of Patchogue for acknowledging June 2019 as Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month,” Douglas Davidson, executive director for the Alzheimer’s Association Long Island Chapter, said in a statement.

“Our ongoing efforts to support, educate and advocate for Long Islanders affected by Alzheimer’s disease in coordination with the County and State Departments of Health, Governor Cuomo and the New York State legislature are key to mitigating the Alzheimer’s public health crisis in New York.”

Simply by having a brain, every person is at risk for developing Alzheimer’s, a fatal disease that cannot be prevented, treated or even slowed, reads a press announcement about the initiative.

There are 5.8 million Americans living with Alzheimer’s disease, including 400,000 in New York State. By 2050 that number is projected to reach as many as 14 million.
