Brightwaters residents headed to Walker Beach for a very special Family Fun Night Wednesday that featured live music and a picnic dinner catered by Bay Shore’s own Big Bubba’s BBQ and Milk and Sugar Café.
It was one of many ongoing, volunteer-driven events sponsored by the Village of Brightwaters to mark its 100 years of incorporation.
Acoustic guitarist Jonny Ray strummed beachy favorites on stage as the young — and the young at heart — danced along to the music. The crowd included 16-month-old Lucca Puccio (pictured), who enjoyed the party with his mom, dad and twin sister Giuliana.
Longtime resident Jane Manahan, 85, (pictured) was also on hand to enjoy the festivities.
“My family came here for the summer of 1938, and we moved in right after the hurricane” she said, noting Brightwaters has always been an extremely family-friendly village driven by the hard work and dedication of its residents.
“These events are fun. My father was a trustee way back,” she said. “Anything that needed to be done… [village] residents would get together and do it,” she said.
A Snapple truck was on site unloading free bottles of iced tea, water, and various energy drinks, courtesy of resident Christopher Pace.
Village Trustee and Deputy Mayor Laurie Elliot welcomed the crowd and thanked the events’ sponsors and volunteers on behalf of the mayor and the board.
She also thanked the Brightwaters Improvement Group (B.I.G) for organizing multiple community fundraisers to build a new playground at the beach, announcing that the new playground could be ready as early as this fall.
“There will be more events for the 100th celebration,” she said.
