National Night Out at William Floyd High School.

From families listening to music, to kids playing with crafts or getting a chance to look inside an EMS vehicle and talk to local police officers, hundreds of people in the community attended last night’s National Night Out at William Floyd High School football field.

The event, sponsored by the Mastic-Moriches-Shirley Community Library, was part of a nationwide initiative to have communities participate in safe group activities and interact with law enforcement agencies. Its goal, in part, is to help demonstrate citizens are in control of their communities.

The event was attended by elected officials and featured a performance by Billy Joel tribute band Captain Jack.

Throughout the night, people went from table to table to meet their neighbors and collect souvenirs from vendors. The number of attendees and vendors was not immediately available.

However, there were plenty of activities for kids, with a large inflatable house, crafts, a petting zoo, coloring wall and EMS vehicle demonstrations.
