Lost Planet Comics and Collectibles has opened its doors in downtown Bay Shore.
As I visited the store myself, I happened upon two excited pre-teen boys asking questions about bobbleheads, as well as an equally awestruck adult who was carefully examining Lost Planet’s vast collection of new comics.
Smiling behind the clerk’s desk was co-owner Kevin Dempsey, whose shop’s opening has been eagerly anticipated for months.
“We had a ‘soft opening’ during the [Bay Shore Arts] festival,” said Dempsey, who didn’t make any big plans for a fanfare-laden grand opening party.
Instead, Dempsey announced the store’s opening on his Facebook page July 29.
‘We will not have every feature, piece of inventory, or furniture set up yet by then,” he wrote, “but we will be happy to finally have our doors open to the public…”
News of Dempsey’s plans to open must have traveled fast.
There was so much anticipation surrounding the opening, that a small crowd had milled around outside on Wednesday morning.
I asked if he took note of the first comic book that he sold here in Bay Shore.
“It was was Spider-man/Deadpool #6 to a dad and a son who were waiting 10 minutes before I opened the door,” Dempsey said.
Lost Planet’s collection is impressive, with comics for everyone — ranging from Archie (my personal favorite) to Batman, to Rat Queens and more. The shop also has a selection of pop culture figurines and collectables including a miniature Stay Puft Marshmallow Man and The Walking Dead Mystery Minis.
Comics fans can also catch a glimpse of Dempsey’s own storytelling in Pronto Comics’ Deathology, which is available for sale in the shop.
Lost Planet is located at 65 E. Main Street and is open Tuesday – Sunday, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
