Southside Hospital today announced the creation of a new helipad that was built on a parking lot next to the hospital’s emergency department in Bay Shore.
The helipad will allow Southside to more efficiently handle patients in need of urgent care.
“Having this helipad at Southside Hospital allows the Northwell Health SkyHealth helicopter and others to safely land and quickly get patients to the medical care they urgently need,” said Anthony Pellicone, Southside’s associate executive director of operations.
The SkyHealth helicopter provides hospital-to-hospital patient transfers through a partnership with Northwell Health and Yale New Haven Health System.
To be clear, the hospital will be accepting all transports, such as those from the Suffolk County Police Department, and not just the SkyHealth helicopter, a spokeswoman said.
Southside’s new emergency department, which will begin receiving patients next month, has been undergoing construction and will be triple its current size in 2017.
