Scenes from this year’s Clam Shucking Contest for the W.I. Breast Cancer Coalition

The West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition’s annual Clam Shucking Contest fundraiser that started in Kismet in the 1990s was held for a third consecutive year at Nicky’s on the Bay in Bay Shore on Tuesday.

The winner of this year’s contest was yet again Carlos Tigre of Bay Shore (the Takeru Kobayashi of local shucking) from Nicky’s on the Bay. The Bay Shore resident shucked 50 clams in 3 min 55 seconds.

He’s won several times before, though not last year.

But the shucking is just a portion of the day-long event. The party also features music, dancing, plenty of seafood, beer and wine, a kids’ corn-shucking contest, and huge cash raffle prizes.

The money raised goes to help Long Island women undergoing breast cancer treatment. That’s possible through the nonprofit group’s Lend a Helping Hand program, which supplies free services such as house cleaning, transportation and much more for local women undergoing cancer treatment.
