Jennifer Frisina thought the South Shore could use a blow dry bar — the type of salon that specializes in just blowouts (no haircuts or coloring).
“They’re on the North Shore and every corner of Manhattan, yet I found none for Amityville to Sayville,” said Frisina, of Lindenhurst. “I just felt there was a need for a blowout bar here,” she said.
So, she cased the downtowns from Amityville to Sayville, and settled on Babylon Village.
Luxe & Co. opened Feb. 1 at 18 Fire Island Avenue.
Frisina’s hunch about the South Shore soon proved correct.
“It’s working,” she said recently. “Most women are becoming repeat customers. And they’re telling their friends about us.”
“I try to make it more of a relaxing, spa experience,” she said, “whereas traditional hair salons are very loud, and noisy, and rushed. Here we have quiet music, candles burning. It’s just a place to chill for a half hour.”
Here’s how it works: For $35, clients can head to Luxe & Co. for a blow out and styling, either before a special event, or just for the beginning of the work week.
“I like to call it an affordable luxury.” Frisina says. “$35 is not a lot these days, and you can feel good.”
Plus, the styles lasts for up to five days, providing you don’t get your hair wet.
“We have stay-at-home moms who have little kids, and they don’t have time to fuss over themselves, so we do that for them,” she says. “And we’re using very expensive hair products and very good hair dryers that aren’t going to burn their hair.”
She said salons make their money from cuts and coloring, so women might feel badly about going in and asking for a blow out.
“They feel like they’re taking [their stylist] away from other stuff,” Frisina said. ” … and we really take our time and do a it right,” she said.
Luxe & Co. also specializes in hair and makeup services for weddings and special events, either in the studio or on location.
