Next time you order a drink, think pink; you will help a woman in the community who is battling cancer.
Thirteen restaurants in the Greater Patchogue area participating in the first-ever “Raise a Pink Drink in the Fight Against Breast Cancer” effort.
For each pink drink sold through June 10, $1 will be donated to the Brookhaven Breast Cancer Survivorship Coalition team. The team is raising money through its participation in the LI2Day Walk through the William Floyd area, also on June 10.
The walk is a massive event (though now it’s one day) during which hundreds of people walk through Mastic and Shirley. It culminates with walkers joining survivors to cross the Smith Point bridge together.
“It really is a powerful, beautiful moment,” says Merilyn Konnerth, the Brookhaven Breast Cancer Survivorship Coalition coordinator.
The coalition is the chief beneficiary of LI2Day Walk proceeds.
The walk, which is 13.1 miles in total, has raised over $6 million to help women fighting breast cancer on Long Island since its inception.

The Brookhaven Breast Cancer Survivorship Coalition, which is a part of Brookhaven Memorial Hospital, helps those undergoing treatment for cancer in a non-clinical way — all for free, Konnerth explained.
“Maybe you’re having trouble getting to treatment, or you’re too weak to take care of your house, or take care of your kids. Or maybe your insurance won’t cover the cost of a wig,” she said. That’s where the coalition comes in.
Konnerth said she is grateful to the Greater Patchogue Chamber of Commerce and its restaurant committee for jumping on board to help.
Restaurant patrons make for an engaged audience, she said.
“The thing with breast cancer on Long Island, sadly, is we all know somebody who’s been through it,” she said. “So this speaks to customers and their families.”
