It was 1985 and Eddie Hilbert was lifeguarding at Gilgo Beach.

That same year, Hilbert’s mentor and fellow Babylon Town lifeguard Lou Howard started Lifeguard Night at the Post Office. Howard also got Hilbert a bartending gig at the bar and restaurant.

Today, the Tuesday night parties at the Post Office are still raging.

And Hilbert is still behind the bar. He’s also now the head lifeguard at Gilgo.

“It was just an idea to get everybody from the Town of Babylon, like ocean lifeguards, pool lifeguards to come down, have a night to go out and have a good time,” he said. “An industry night for lifeguards … and it just took off from there.

“Every year since then it’s been a really good night.”

GreaterBabylon paid a visit this past Tuesday night. The party really gets rolling around 10:30 p.m. to 11 p.m., with both dance floors quickly filling up and a steady crowd thereafter.

The Post Office offers drink specials, shot specials and lifeguard-themed giveaways.

This week, Jack Daniel’s showed up to the party with a spin-the-wheel game for prizes and a photo booth. And the shot girls are dressed as lifeguards, complete with white tank tops, red shorts and whistles.

Patrick Fallot, 30, of Amityville is also a Gilgo Beach lifeguard. He’s been hitting up Lifeguard Night the past nine years.

“You’d be foolish not to come here,” he said. “It’s a Tuesday night in the summer, and where else would you go? Everybody’s here. It’s a great time. It’s actually the greatest thing ever.”
