It is that time of year again when the leaves begin to fall and we prepare for the coming winter months.

And the Cemetery Restoration Committee of Patchogue, along with the Patchogue Medford Library, is hosting a clean-up day at Lakeview Cemetery on Saturday, Oct. 14 from 10 a.m. to  1 p.m.

For its part, the library is participating in a Suffolk County Libraries initiative called The Great Give Back. Over 50 libraries across Suffolk County is marking the day with some kind of community service event.

“We knew that the Lakeview Cemetery needed periodic maintenance and looks for volunteers, so we thought it would be a good match” said Michele Cayea, a teen/media services librarian at Patchogue-Medford Library“We have a great group of teen volunteers that care about the community and are always looking for new projects. We are proud of the community that we live and work in and want to be an active part in making it look the best we can!”

The Cemetery Restoration Committee is grateful to the library for recognizing the need for continued maintenance to the historic property.

This will be the 3rd cleanup effort at the cemetery in recent months, and just in time for the Dia de los Muertos Celebration, a major fundraising event benefiting the Cemetery Restoration Committee, on Nov. 4.  (See below for more.)

Last year, the celebration included short guided cemetery tours and due to its popularity, tours will again be provided to guests.

Funds raised last year enabled the committee to improve the electric wiring and lighting inside the cemetery and several of the beautiful monuments are back in the spotlight.

We are fortunate to have volunteers from the Greater Patchogue Foundation, St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Cub Scout troop 543 and Boy Scout troop 40, Pat-Med High School, Historical Society, Cemetery Restoration Committee, and the Patchogue community at large.

It is a great way for students to give back to their community and earn credits towards Community Service Projects.

So join us-grab your gloves, rakes and gardening tools as we pick up litter, rake, weed, plant and mulch. We provide the bags, water and a whole lot of gratitude.

Join us on Saturday, Nov. 4, 2017, as we celebrate the lives of those laid to rest at Lakeview Cemetery with the Latin celebration of Dia de los Muertos.

All proceeds benefit the Cemetery Restoration Committee of Patchogue and their devotion to conserving the historic Lakeview Cemetery.
