State DOT extending shared-use path from Tobay Beach to Captree State Park

|

The state Department of Transportation is planning to run a shared-use path the entire length of Ocean Parkway, through the Town of Babylon and into Islip.

Transportation officials asking for public input.

There’s an open house taking place on Wednesday, Oct. 25, between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. at the Jones Beach State Park West Bathhouse. DOT representatives will be on hand to answer questions and receive public comment. You can park at Field 4.

The existing path is part of the Ocean Parkway Coastal Greenway that runs through Jones Beach State Park and along the Ocean State Parkway, but it ends at Tobay Beach in the Town of Oyster Bay.

This third phase of the project would continue the pathway from Tobay Beach along the north side of Ocean Parkway for 1o miles to Captree State Park.

The goal all along has been to provide a continuous 14.4-mile shared-use path that connects the existing Wantagh State Parkway path in Nassau County to Captree State Park.

The cost of the final phase was not indicated by the DOT, though the second phase, the 3.6 mile path between Jones Beach State Park and Tobay Beach, cost $3.8 million, according to prior DOT public releases.

Plans for the final phase include a 10- to 13-foot-wide path that would provide “access to the scenic waterfront and parkway, new bicycle parking areas at locations near existing parking facilities, new native planting to provide a buffer for the communities along the barrier island and additional wildlife habitat,” according to a DOT announcement Friday.

Work is expected to start in the summer of 2019 and wrap up in the summer of 2020.
