An estimated 6,500 people flocked to Main Street in Patchogue on New Year’s Eve to ring in the new year NYC-style, complete with a countdown and a huge, LED-lit ball — along with Fireworks by Grucci.

The glowing, color-changing ball was made by North Star Signs & Neon Inc. of East Patchogue.

The attendance Thursday night more than doubled the inaugural New Year’s Eve countdown event — called Midnight on Main St. — last December, which attracted about 3,000 people to East Main Street.

The crowd estimates were provided by the Greater Patchogue Chamber of Commerce, which organized the event using donations from area business and a huge contribution from Blue Point Brewing Company.

Patchogue Mayor Paul Pontieri led the countdown, which actually happened at 9 p.m., not midnight.
