The Greater Long Island team took home three awards from this past weekend’s New York Press Association Better Newspaper Contest in Albany.
The biggest award went to reporter Nicholas Esposito, who earned First Place in the Feature Story category — the most competitive single category in the contest — in Division 1.
“Urban Farming arrives in Bay Shore … “ was described by the judges with “one word — outstanding.”
“A key to any feature story is to capture who a person is beyond what they do or why they do it,” the judges wrote.
“This does a great job of telling a story that is both interesting and informative …”
Esposito, a St. Joseph’s College graduate, has been a reporter for the Greater Long Island websites since November 2016.
His urban farming piece was published in June 2017 on GreaterBayShore.
The Greater Long Island news sites actually took two of the top 3 spots in the Division 1 feature story category. Intern Alyssa Vera of Medford, also a student at St. Joseph’s, won for her coverage of Brookhaven Town’s partnership with local coffee roasters and farmers to utilize spent coffee grounds for fertilizer.
“It was well written and interesting,” the judges wrote.
Lastly, both Vera and Greater Long Island editorial director Michael White teamed up for a Third Place award for the company’s collective coverage of the environment last year.
Greater LI submitted five stories for consideration for the environmental coverage award.
