It was the word “chortle.”

That’s what punched fourth grader Heidi Almskog’s ticket to Hofstra University for the big regional Scripps National Spelling Bee.

Heid’s win in the Academy Street Elementary School spelling bee was announced this week by Bayport-Blue Point School District officials. She had competed against 14 finalists from the school’s fourth and fifth grades.

The contest went 10 rounds before Heidi clinched it by successfully spelling chortle, which of course means to laugh in a breathy, gleeful way, according to to Google.

The Hofstra contest is on Sunday, March 13. Click here for more information.
