It was a Sunday barbecue just how Dashan Briggs would’ve enjoyed it.
On Sept. 23, family members organized the first annual Dashan Briggs Family Fun Day & BBQ at Riverhead’s Stotzky Park to remember Briggs, whose life was taken on March 15 in a helicopter crash in western Iraq
Briggs, 30, a Port Jefferson Station resident, grew up in Riverhead, where he starred on the football and lacrosse teams.
“It was a really fun day, and was a great success,” said his sister-in-law, Tara Karen. “I can’t wait until next year’s event.”
The day featured live music, a brisket contest, and lawn games — all of Briggs’ favorite things to do on a Sunday, says Karen.
The money raised went to Brigg’s wife, Rebecca, and children Jayden and Ava.

The Briggs family has also set up a t-shirt fundraiser, which will benefit Dashan’s two children.
