About 100 people headed to the banks of the Great South Bay in Brightwaters Saturday for the annual B.I.G. Polar Bear Plunge fundraiser to help efforts in the village.
The air temps were reasonable but there was plenty of snow along Walker Beach following this week’s nor’easter. (Photos below by Craig Low.)
The youngest of the 50 plungers was just 3 years old, said organizers with the B.I.G., or Brightwaters Improvement Group.
“Kids dressed up in costumes of sharks and orcas keeping with the festive spirit,” said B.I.G. committee member Bernadette Whitwell. “The Mayor of Brightwaters, even jumped in in a suit and tie!” (Scroll down for photos.)

There were raffle baskets with goods donated by local businesses. And Sherry’s Market of Babylon was on hand, serving up free hot chocolate and gourmet marshmallows.
Dulce de Leche Bakery also donated cupcakes.
B.I.G. had previously raised $4,000 for a new swing set and special needs swing at Walker Beach. Another $5,000 was raised Saturday to do the same for Wohseepee Park.
“In our inaugural Polar Bear Plunge, we raised money for a swing set and special needs swing at Walker Beach,” said Whitwell. “It was so well received by the community, that there was a request for another swing set and special needs swing for Wohseepee Park.”
