Just winning — that’s what Sayville grads Max Llewellyn, CJ Messina and Ty Kolar keep doing during their rookie seasons at Cortland.
The Class of 2021 trio went from one juggernaut (the spring 2021 Rutgers Trophy-winning Golden Flashes who outscored their opponents 247-55) to another (Cortland is 8-0 this fall and has walloped their opponents 374-54).
The three physical education majors haven’t lost a game in nearly two years. And that loss came in the 2019 Long Island championship game to Plainedge.
Cortland clinched the Empire 8 conference title and an NCAA Division III tournament automatic berth last Saturday with a 47-3 route over Alfred University. The No. 15 Red Dragons visit St. John Fisher (4-4) on Saturday, and then host their top rival Ithaca (7-1) on Nov. 13. The NCAA Div. III playoffs begin on Nov. 20.
The Red Dragons have received contributions from each of the team’s three freshman Sayvillites.
Messina, who earned Suffolk County’s National Football Foundation Award for Most Outstanding Receiver last spring, has been the primary punt and kickoff returner for Cortland. He has returned 11 punts for 62 yards, and 10 kickoffs for 215 yards.
Llewellyn, last spring’s recipient of the Zellner Award, which recognizes Suffolk’s Most Outstanding Lineman, has played in six games as a freshman, recording six tackles. In the Red Dragons’ 48-3 win over Hartwick on Oct. 16, he had a sack while tallying three tackles for a loss.
Kolar — a finalist last spring for the Collatta Award, which recognizes the county’s Most Outstanding Linebacker — recorded a tackle in the win over Hartwick.
