William “Bill” Gunther, a Korean War veteran who spent 30 years in the FDNY before retiring as a captain in 1988, died on Tuesday, Sept. 3, at his home in Sayville. He was 89.
A grandfather of 13 and a great-grandfather of 19, Gunther was a devoted American Legion member who joined New York’s fire department in 1968, rising through the ranks over his long career.
Gunther was preceded in death by wife his Patsy; a daughter Jean; two grandsons, Ryan and Robert; and a great-grandson, Gabriel. He is survived by three children, Barbara, Kenneth and Steven; 11 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; his sister Mary Gunther Gigantino; and his partner for the last 15 years, Fran.
“My brother was my hero. He was always there for me,” said Gunther’s sister in a comment on his obituary. “I can’t imagine life without him. Till we meet again.”
Scheduled services
Visitation services are taking place on Thursday, Sept. 5, from 2-4:30 p.m. and 7-9:30 p.m. A church service for Gunther will take place at 11 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 6, at St. John’s Lutheran Church of Sayville. A burial service will follow at Calverton National Cemetery.
