Center Moriches has forfeited Friday’s Division IV football game against Miller Place due to a coxsackie outbreak among team members, Greater Long Island has learned.
Players and parents were informed Friday afternoon that the 6 p.m. matchup, scheduled to be played at Miller Place High School, was cancelled.
The team’s Instagram page posted a notification at 4:15 that the game had been called.
Coxsackie, also known as hand, foot and mouth disease, is a contagious viral infection that spreads through close contact. It commonly affects children but can occur in people of all ages, often causing fever, sore throat, and rashes or blisters on the hands, feet and mouth.
With the forfeit, Miller Place improves to 3-1 on the season. The Panthers were coming off a thrilling but heartbreaking 28-27 road loss to Mount Sinai.
Center Moriches drops to 1-3 after picking up its first win of the year last week, a dominant 49-13 victory over Port Jefferson.
