Shirley mom faces setback after third brain surgery

|
Caitlyn Weldon of Shirley has experienced a major setback in her treatment for glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer.

A young Shirley mother battling brain cancer is facing a serious setback after her latest brain surgery.

Caitlyn Weldon, 27, was rushed back to the hospital last week — just four days after her previous operation — due to excessive leaking from her surgical incision.

Doctors discovered a severe infection in her brain, prompting a third craniotomy to remove infected bone fragments and replace them with metal mesh.

“This devastating turn of events means Caitlyn is now facing a 7–10 day hospital stay and a delay in the start of her treatments,” said her friend Taylor Strong, who organized GoFundMe effort last month on Weldon’s behalf.

“She is now on the road to recovery once again, so please keep her in your prayers as she continues her uphill battle.”

Weldon, a William Floyd High School alumna who has a 5-year-old son, was diagnosed with glioblastoma last month after feeling ill and visiting urgent care facilities multiple times with no answers, Strong said.

Friends, family and neighbors have rallied around Weldon through the GoFundMe page, helping cover medical and living expenses as she moves forward with treatment. The effort has raised over $45,000 though nearly 500 donations.
