The Commack White Castle takes a slider break for a makeover

|

The longstanding and beloved White Castle restaurant in Commack is closed, with a chain-link fence now surrounding the property along Jericho Turnpike.

But rumors of its death have been greatly exaggerated.

A banner has gone up along the fence at the landmark 2237 Jericho Turnpike location, indicating the restaurant is “closed for remodeling.”

Those craving a White Castle are encouraged to visit the nearest location in Deer Park.

There were no immediate planning or redevelopment filings tied to the address readily available through the Town of Smithtown website site on Monday.

GLI has reached out to White Castle representatives in Columbus, Ohio, and the Smithtown Town supervisor for any details on the rebuild.

Some background

The fast-food chain’s slider outpost has been a fixture along the busy Jericho Turnpike corridor for decades, serving customers at all hours for generations.

Indeed, many early mornings were spent in Commack after nights of 80s and 90s clubbing (whether people remember those nights well, or not).

And plans to modernize the location have surfaced before.

In 2017, The Long-Islander reported that White Castle was exploring a proposal to demolish the existing restaurant and replace it with a new building featuring a redesigned drive-thru.

White Castle has operated dozens of locations across the New York region, including several on Long Island.
