Against all odds: Long Island man wins the lottery twice

|

Apparently, lightning can strike twice.

Against the most unlikeliest of odds, a West Hempstead man has won two Mega Millions second prizes. Marco Accardo claimed both of his $1 million prizes last week, according to New York Lottery.

Accardo had the same five numbers — 05 09 15 16 17 — on two separate tickets for the Mega Millions drawing held over a year ago on Nov. 11, 2022, New York Lottery reported. Though he had different Mega Ball numbers for each ticket, and neither matched the Mega Ball selected that night, 25.

The odds of winning the second prize are about 12.5 million to one. The odds of winning it twice become significantly more astronomical.

The lucky two-time winner received a total payout of $1.3 million after required withholdings. He purchased both tickets at Bolla 820 Hempstead C-Store, located at 820 Hempstead Ave. in West Hempstead.

Acardo is the second big New York Lottery winner in a week from Long Island. Vincent Burzotta of West Babylon won $3 million playing New York Lottery’s Multiplier Craze scratch-off game.
