“Destroy All Genders: The Ultimate Gender Drag Show” is set for a one-night performance tonight at the CM Performing Arts Center in Oakdale.
The all-gender drag show is a charity fundraiser that features an all-star cast of queens, kings, and non-binary drag performers pushing the boundaries of gender expression.
Tickets for tonight’s 8 p.m. show can be purchased at the door or online by clicking HERE.
“This show really is going to be a fun and creative way of encompassing gender expression and breaking down boundaries at the same time,” said Eileen Tyznar, president of the Sayville Chamber of Commerce.
Proceeds from the show will benefit The Transgender Resource Center of Long Island, an organization working to elevate the transgender and gender non-conforming community and establish a safe environment for everyone in Suffolk and Nassau counties.
In spite of increased awareness and education, violence against transgender people persists. Since 2015, there have been more than 100 deaths of transgender people due to fatal violence in the United States, according to the Human Rights Campaign.
“What makes our drag show special is that we embrace all forms of gender expression,” said Mila Madison, executive director of The Transgender Resource Center of Long Island. “The point is destroy all preconceived notions of what gender is to ultimately defy the concept of the gender binary that is imposed upon us by society.”
Madison said the three-hour show will include performers who are masculine, feminine and non-binary — a spectrum of gender identities that are not exclusively masculine or feminine.
“Some of those performers identify as trans, while others do not,” Madison said. “The point is to make people think about gender as a whole, and hopefully people will realize that some of the rules we associate with gender are limiting to all people.”
