The final production of Argyle Theatre‘s fifth season is well underway.
The Babylon Village playhouse, which brings Broadway-caliber musicals to the Island, is finishing off the summer with “Bye Bye Birdie.”
The show, running now through Sept. 1, is a great production to cap off the season because it’s enjoyable for all ages, said Dylan Perlman, co-owner and managing partner of the Argyle Theatre.
“It’s fun, with great music, and what we love most for our summer shows is doing something that can appeal to all generations,” he said.
The classic play, which was later adapted into a movie, is set in 1950s small-town America and follows teen heartthrob Conrad Birdie, a draftee who chooses All-American girl Kim MacAfee for a very public farewell kiss.
“It’s a play many people know well, but it hasn’t been done much professionally on the Island in a long time,” said Perlman.
“A grandparent can take their kids, who can take their kids. For the older generation, it’s all about the nostalgia. For the younger generation, it could be their first time seeing the play. It’s a great chance for families to make special memories.”
The lead actor, playing Birdie, is Greenport native John Drinkwater. He also performs in New York City and is featured on this season of Fox’s “I Can See Your Voice,” now streaming on Hulu.
“We love having Long Islanders, especially when they are starring,” said Perlman.

Upgrades coming to Argyle Theatre
After production wraps, Perlman said the theatre will take a few months’ break to renovate the space, including adding a new marquee, as well as plans for other exterior and interior upgrades. Check back later with greaterlongisland.com for more details on this.
