The Long Island Benefit Concert for Hurricane Relief at Overlook Beach raised nearly $10,000 for the devastated areas of Florida, Texas, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico and elsewhere in the U.S.
Now the event organizers are being honored for their efforts.
Jack Spiller of Jumpin’ Jack Stereo, Joe Scollo of Full House Music, and Johnie Epirnal of the Masonic Lodge 793 — the men responsible for setting up and running the concert on Oct. 8 — were each given a Certificate of Appreciation by the Town of Babylon.
“It was a great honor; I never received an award like that before,” said Spiller, whose company donated musical equipment for the entertainment.
In a ceremony on Oct. 17, a large check of $9,500 was presented to the American Red Cross by the Babylon Fire Chiefs Association, which helped fundraise at the benefit.
“The damage and hardship we’ve seen over the past few months due to hurricanes are a somber reminder of the state of our community five years ago, when Superstorm Sandy hit,” said Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer, who sponsored the event. “We all were in agreement that we wanted to return the favor, and are excited we were able to raise $10,000.”
The concert had a rainy start but that didn’t stop people from across Babylon Town from supporting the cause, and of course watch ZEBRA and the other acts preform.
“Watching fans come out in the bad weather was really amazing,” said Spiller.
