The Overlook Beach 9/11 Memorial was populated with elected officials, first responders, and other community members Monday night to remember the lives taken during the terror attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.
The ceremony, which was co-hosted by Babylon Town and the Town of Babylon Fire Chiefs Association, began at 6:45 p.m. with a procession of firefighters.
Together the crowd stood and honored the 48 Babylon Town residents who perished at the World Trade Center.
“Even 16 years after Sept. 11, 2001, we strive to find hope in moments of hopelessness that still haunt us,” said Babylon Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer.
Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone also attended the service. He spoke about how unusual this year seemed, as the coming 16th anniversary wasn’t covered much by the national media.
“It startled me when I realized their was no coverage,” said Bellone.
With the storm coverage of Category 4 Hurricane Irma, Sept. 11 television-based memorials were pushed, which Bellone said was disappointing.
“It made me think how important it is to make sure we never stop thinking about and coming together as a community and as a country about Sept. 11, 2001,” he said.
