Bathing advisory applies to three beaches in Sayville and Bayport

|

Hopefully, conditions change in time for the weekend.

But for now, Bayport Beach, Sayville Marina Park Beach and West Oaks Recreation Club Beach are among 63 Suffolk beaches that the county’s Department of Health Services has advised swimmers to avoid until at least the morning of Saturday, June 1.

Also on the list is Blue Point’s Corey Beach in neighboring Brookhaven Town.

The advisory is based on the potential that the presence of bacteria at levels that exceed New York state standards will impact these areas. The beaches covered by the advisory are in areas heavily influenced by stormwater runoff from the surrounding watersheds and/or adjacent tributaries.

The department recommends bathing and other water contact be suspended in affected areas until the waters have been flushed by two successive tidal cycles (at least a 24-hour period) after the cessation of rainfall. The good news for beachgoers is that there is no rain in the forecast until Sunday afternoon.

Officials will lift the advisory Saturday morning, unless further sampling tests reveal elevated levels of bacteria persisting beyond the 24-hour period.
