An Islip woman was drunk when she slammed into a fire department ambulance early Sunday in Bay Shore as an injured man was being loaded into the vehicle, police said.

The Islip Fire Department ambulance was parked on Main Street, just east of Third Avenue, with its emergency lights activated when a 2017 Honda Accord driven by Edith Cairo, 32, crashed into about 2:15 a.m., Suffolk Police said.

At the time of the wreck, a 26-year-old Islip man was being loaded into the rear of the ambulance for treatment of injuries, police said.

A second ambulance was dispatched to take the patient to a local hospital, where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries. No one else was hurt, police said.

Third Precinct officers determined the Accord’s driver was intoxicated and arrested her at the scene.

At Suffolk First District Court in Central Islip on Sunday, Cairo pleaded not guilt Sunday to driving while intoxicated. She is due back in court on Thursday.
