Bellport’s Alex Vargas next fight will be on national TV

|

Bellport’s professional undefeated boxer Alex Vargas is getting a chance to show the world what he’s got.

Vargas (6-0, 1 KO) will face-off against Chauncey Grace, another perfect fighter at 6-0 with 4 KOs, on Friday, Aug. 21, at Osceola Heritage Park in Kissimmee, Fla., live on Telemundo Deportes. [Editor’s Note: the fight was moved up a week, it was originally set for Aug. 28]

This will be the first televised match of his career.

“I always wanted to show everyone out of New York what I can do,” Vargas told GreaterPatchogue. “Now the whole country, and other countries, will get to see what I got.”

The Bellporter’s first six fights all have been on Long Island on Joe DeGuardia’s Star Boxing “Rockin’ Fights” cards at The Paramount in Huntington.

His last fight was in February when he overcame his opponent with a unanimous decision victory.

Now, things are different.

Since gyms have been closed down due to the pandemic, the welterweight has been getting back to his roots.

Instead of the treadmill, he straps up his sneakers and hits the pavement, running miles along the South Shore. And instead of practicing with his usual sparring partners, he’s been hitting a bag that he hung himself in his garage.

Even with the drawbacks, Vargas says he is in the best shape of his life, which he also attributes to his new strength and condition coach, Anthony Tuminello.

“He’s got me feeling better than ever,” said Vargas.

The southpaw wants to take all the hard work and parlay it into a big finish over an adversary he describes as “a tough opponent.”

“I really look forward to making a statement with my performance on first televised fight,” said the former Golden Gloves winner.

The fight night will go live around midnight.

To watch the six-round bout, the local Telemundo channels are 16 on Optimum and 12 or 512 (HD) on Verizon Fios. You can also watch the live stream on the Telemundo app.
