Bellport’s Alex Vargas schedules pro boxing debut at The Paramount

|

Bellport’s Alex Vargas has been waiting for this moment for a long time.

Since watching Floyd Mayweather and Mike Tyson growing up, the former Golden Gloves winner has always dreamed of strapping on pro gear.

Now he will get his chance.

The 23-year-old, who recently inked a pro contract, has scheduled his pro debut at The Paramount of Huntington for Friday, Sept. 21.

The fight, which is under Joe DeGuardia’s Star Boxing “Rockin’ Fights” series, will be against Philadelphia fighter Deron Lawson (0-1).

“It is a great venue,” said Vargas. “I have watched a few pro fights there and I’ve always wanted to have my pro debut there. It’s on Long Island so a lot of Long Islanders come out and support.”

On a prior trip to the Paramount, Vargas actually saw Lawson’s debut — and this was before the Vargas-Lawson bout was ever scheduled.

“I didn’t even know I would be fighting him one day,” said Vargas. “But now I have an idea what he likes to do.”

“He is a tough guy,” he added. “It’s going to be a good fight.”

Vargas, who trains at Finest Fitness in Patchogue with his father, says being a pro fighter requires much more daily discipline.

“There is a lot more training,” he said. “The diet has been more strict.”

He’s now boxing at 147 pounds; he fought at 152 as an amateur.

He believes his fighting style will translate to the pros, especially with smaller gloves and no head gear.

“I’m excited because I know I have good power,” he said. “I think I can do very well, and maybe knock some people out, but I have to be cautious. Any punch can hurt you now.”
