Bellport’s Alex Vargas had The Paramount in Huntington rocking as soon as he was introduced Friday night.
“Vargas! Vargas! Vargas!” the crowd chanted as the former Golden Gloves winner headed to the ring during the Joe DeGuardia’s Star Boxing “Rockin’ Fights” series.
In his first-ever professional bout, Vargas defeated Philadelphia fighter Deron Lawson (0-2) by unanimous decision.
“It’s surreal,” Vargas told GreaterPatchogue moments after the fight. “It still doesn’t feel real.”
That chanting carried over to each of the four rounds in the tilt.
“They told me that was the loudest crowd that’s ever been here; I am very appreciative of them,” Vargas said.
But the 23-year-old said beating Lawson was no easy task.
“He was a very tough opponent,” said Vargas. “He had sharp jabs, was in shape, and has a great chin. I landed some clean shots and he just kept on going forward.”
Vargas, who trains at Finest Fitness in Patchogue, said it was key to slow down his opponent with consistent blows to the body.
“With the smaller gloves, you can really see the difference it makes,” said the 147-pounder.
Now, the newly undefeated boxer wants more.
“I am going to fight again,” he said. “Hopefully [at The Paramount]. I heard they want me here next time so we’ll do it again.”
