The Bellport varsity cheerleading team put down their pom-poms for a day to support those racing in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk at Jones Beach.
“Breast cancer has been near and dear to my heart,” said Samantha Berkowitz, who’s in her first year coaching the team. “I have friends that have been affected by breast cancer and the girls knew it.”
Together the 13 cheerleaders sold apparel and baked goods to raise $415 for the American Cancer Society.
“The girls were very excited [about participating],” said Berkowitz, 26, who grew up in West Babylon. The run was Oct. 15.
Moving forward, the team plans to make the walk an annual tradition, and even hopes to perform at the fundraiser.
“We are looking to get stationed at one of the [walk’s] checkpoints to cheer and do stunts to encourage the walkers,” said Berkowitz.
