Nita Webb, a dedicated community leader and tireless advocate in and around Bellport, passed away on Dec. 5 at the age of 74.

Affectionately known as “Mama Nita,” Webb’s death has stirred deep sadness in Bellport and the South Country school district, where she was known for her commitment to bettering the community.

In 2022, Webb received the Women’s Recognition Award from the Town of Brookhaven, honoring her lifelong dedication to service. She was an active member of The Journey Church in East Patchogue and a steadfast supporter of numerous local organizations, including Compass Unity, the Boys & Girls Club of the Bellport Area and South Country’s Community Resource Network.

Faith Johnson, a close friend of Webb, summed up the thoughts of many in the community: “She was a perfect person.”

South Country schools Superintendent Antonio Santana described Webb as “kind, loving, and non-judgmental,” adding that her passing has left a significant void in the community.

“I’m not sure I’ve met a person that was as kind, loving, and non-judgmental as Ms. Webb proved to be in all my interactions with her,” Santana wrote in a statement that has been circulating across the community. “She always advocated for our entire community, no matter what your beliefs or political affiliations were.

“She saw the good in everyone and was vested in spreading love with a kind heart that really was unmatched in my experience,” he added.

‘Immeasurable’ contributions

The Boys & Girls Club of the Bellport Area also paid tribute to Webb in a heartfelt Facebook post, describing her as the “epitome of the values we strive to instill in our youth.”

“Her commitment to our mission was unwavering, and her contributions were immeasurable,” the post read. “Ms. Webb truly embodied the spirit of service and leadership. Her loss is deeply felt not only by our Board, staff, and members but also by the greater South Country community she so passionately served.”
