Benjamin Beach in Bay Shore has been closed for the second time in two weeks due to excess levels of bacteria, according to the Suffolk County health department.
The beach in the Bay Shore Marina was first closed Aug. 9, though it was opened the next day after re-testing. It was closed again to bathing on Thursday, Aug. 17, until further notice.
Bathing in bacteria-contaminated water can result in gastrointestinal illness, as well as infections of the eyes, ears, nose, and throat, according to county health commissioner Dr. James Tomarken.
For the latest information on affected beaches and for reopenings, call the Bathing Beach HOTLINE at 631-852-5822 or contact the Department’s Office of Ecology at 631-852-5760 during normal business hours. Click here to learn more about the beach monitoring program.
