First a heating system busted. That led to a water main break. And now, Christmas is cancelled at the Town of Brookhaven’s Holtsville Ecology Site in Holtsville.
Well, at at least the annual Brookhaven Town Holiday Spectacular in cancelled.
“The untimely failure of a heating system coupled with a water main break directly below one of our buildings has forced us to make this difficult decision,” said Brookhaven Highway Superintendent Dan Losquadro.
The indoor, walk-through holiday light show, which serves as a fundraiser for the animal rescue center, is typically a huge draw. Thousands of families have walked through the winter wonderland of lighted, festive displays over the years.
But, Losquadro added, in lieu of the Spectacular, the town is planning a tree-lighting ceremony on Dec. 6.
All are invited to the 6 p.m. event at the Holtsville Ecology Site at 249 Buckley Road.
“Plan to arrive early as parking inside the site will fill up,” Losquadro said. “As always, Santa will be arriving by helicopter and the Holtsville Fire Department will be on hand to bring him right to the stage.”
There will also be local dance team performances, Christmas carols, hot chocolates and “great new visual effects,” he added.
Though Santa’s workshop won’t be available for photos, as it typically is, Santa himself will be around for family pictures, for a fee.
