Stranger caught sleeping in Hamptons backyard — next to stolen SUV

|

A Brooklyn man was caught snoozing Sunday afternoon — in a stranger’s backyard in the Hamptons, next to an SUV that wasn’t even his, Southampton Town Police said.

The homeowners got a shock when they pulled into their Southampton driveway about 12:57 p.m. and spotted an unfamiliar vehicle parked there and a man they didn’t know sleeping in their backyard, Southampton Town Police said.

Cops arrived to find 34-year-old Matthew Wynhurst of Brooklyn dozing in the grass. He was promptly arrested and charged with third-degree criminal trespassing, a misdemeanor.

But things would get even more weird and the defendant would get a little deeper in trouble.

Wynhurst told the police that the SUV wasn’t his. Detectives soon discovered the vehicle was stolen in New York City sometime overnight. That detail upped the ante — and Wynhurst’s charges — to include second-degree criminal possession of stolen property, a felony.

Wynhurst was taken to Southampton Town Police Headquarters, processed, and held overnight Sunday. He is expected to be arraigned on Monday.
