Police in Shirley rescued a clammer whose boat became stuck in the ice Tuesday afternoon in Narrow Bay by the Smith Point Bridge.
Suffolk County Police Marine Bureau officers used their boat to break up the ice and towed the man’s boat back to shore, police said. The police were responding to a 911 call that came in about 2:30 p.m.
The clammer was the only occupant of the boat and he was not injured, police said.
Frigid temperatures over the last week had turned parts of the bay to ice. A thaw is expected in the coming days with more mild temperatures forecasted for the area.
