He claimed he was robbed. But police say he just never did the job.
Suffolk County Police over the weekend arrested an unlicensed contractor who accepted money for a home improvement job, then falsely reported that the cash was stolen weeks later during a bogus robbery, cops said.
Investigators said Troy Mayer, 36, of Commack, called 911 on April 21 to report he had been robbed by two people of $26,300 in cash. On April 2, a Port Jefferson Station family paid Mayer, who owns Pure Renovations, $25,000 for a basement renovation, authorities said.
But detectives with the department’s Second Squad determined the robbery never happened, saying that Mayer made up the story after taking the money and failing to do the home improvement work.
After being held overnight in jail, Mayer pleaded not guilty Sunday at First District Court in Central Islip to second-degree grand larceny, falsely reporting an incident and operating without a contractor’s license.
Police meanwhile are asking anyone who may have been a victim of Mayer or has additional information to contact the Second Squad at 631.854.8252.
Mayer is due back in court on Aug. 28.
