The Mastic community and beyond have now raised more than $10,000 to help offset the funeral costs of a 30-year-old father of four who was shot and killed early Saturday in Mastic.

Alex Smith, the younger brother of former WBO light heavyweight champion boxer Joe “The Beast” Smith Jr., was shot in a confrontation that took place in the parking lot of Linsa Torr’s Place about 2 a.m. He died at the scene.

Smith of Mastic leaves behind four young children, ranging in age from 10 months to 9 years old. His broken-hearted family established a GiveSendGo page to raise money for his funeral.

“Our son was tragically murdered. We are absolutely devastated by the loss of Alex and were not by any means prepared to pay for the funeral of our son,” reads the GiveSendGo page for Smith. “We would like for Alex to receive the memorial he deserves in order to honor his memory and for us all to say our last goodbyes.”

Funeral arrangements for Smith, who has eight siblings, have not been made public.

The police have not made an arrest in the shooting and are investigating the motive of the shooting.
