Community raises over $1.2M for Stony Brook University Hospital

|

A fundraiser created to help frontline healthcare workers at Stony Brook University Hospital has raised over $1.2 million in less than two weeks.

The crowdsourcing campaign, named the Coronavirus Crisis Challenge, began March 20 when local philanthropists, the Della Pietra family, said it would match funds dollar-for-dollar up of up to $250,000 to help the hospital workers.

Within days the goal was quickly met, so the Della Pietras increased the challenge to $500,000. Just 24 hours later, the Clarkson and Heintzelman family upped the ante, increasing the match to $750,000.

“It’s remarkable to see how many people this Challenge has inspired, not only from the geographic area the Hospital serves but from around the world,” said interim SBU President Michael Bernstein.

As of Wednesday, there have been a total of 1,515 contributors with the total funds raised — including the match — equalling $1,211,184.

The money raised so far has gone to ordering more protective medical gear, such as gloves, gowns, and N95 masks, as well as a generator that sanitizes the masks.

“Stony Brook Medicine is at the forefront of COVID-19,” said Pamela Hurst-Della Pietra on behalf of the Della Pietra family. “Let’s work together to help families get through this crisis.”
