How big of a deal is the grand opening of Long Island’s first Wegmans?
So big that Suffolk County Police have advised motorists of road closures for the event in Lake Grove on Wednesday, Feb. 26.
Large crowds are expected to gather around the newly opened supermarket, located at 3270 Middle Country Road in the DSW Plaza, from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. The Suffolk County Police Department is advising motorists to anticipate an increase in traffic on Middle Country Road, Alexander Avenue, New Moriches Road and Hallock Road.
“Motorists not attending the opening should use alternate roads in the area,” the police said in a statement.
Moreover, the police department recommends exercising caution and being prepared for significant congestion throughout the day.
Drivers should consider checking local traffic updates on Wednesday, as well.
The popular Rochester-based supermarket chain’s first Long Island store opens at 9 a.m. on Wednesday after nearly three years of planning and construction. Measuring 100,000 square feet, the Lake Grove location is just the third Wegmans in the region, following openings in Brooklyn and Manhattan.
The shelves are stocked

The Lake Grove location features the largest sub sandwich station in the metropolitan New York market, according to the company.
A Wegmans spokesperson said the company typically opens two to three locations per year. The Lake Grove store will become the first to open in 2025, followed by locations in Norwalk, Connecticut, and Rockville, Maryland, later in 2025.
